Today is fish market day!!!!! (after hitting the post office and mailing back the rice cooker and a bunch of other souvenirs). The kids are so excited to walk around and see (and smell) the exotic Japanese fish market: the Hasshoku Center. We went down to Hachinohe which has one of the largest indoor fish markets in Japan. Outside the market, the kids prepared themselves with menthol scented nose plugs (that I found at the Japanese dollar store). After walking in, they realized that the smell wasn’t that bad and ditched the nose plugs (lol). It was a fun field trip just to see, get ice cream, and then head off to the Shimoda Mall for the big arcade.
We gave the kids about $25 each to go have fun in the arcade, playing everything from Dance Dance Revolution, air hockey, Mario Cart (Lily came in first and Jess cinched 2nd place with a mushroom right at the end), a taiko drum game, and then the notorious claw machines. Liam happened to score so big on the claw machines winning not once but two times back to back with high end anime figures (street value appears to be over $100 in the US). This definitely was a highlight for Liam on this trip.
After such a big win we headed off for lunch and then wandered around the mall a bit more before heading back to Misawa. Driving into town, Kevin and I realized that our favorite dessert shop was open so we had to stop in for some Japanese French dessert cakes (so delicious!)
We got back to base and then headed out to what was one of our favorite bars: Paddy’s Irish Pub. The kids took off and went bowling on base and had a great time. Paddy’s ended up being quite a disappointment, it looked the same and the woman that we knew was still working there; however, they served ONLY Guinness. The Guinness was really good but it used to feature more drinks. We had our one beer and then ended up talking to another couple that was reliving their glory days from 20 years ago. It was fun comparing notes from when we were all stationed in Misawa to the now.
Another great day for the books!
