Day 1 was an epic start to our family 2025 Japanese vacation. After a huge breakfast where we sampled western and eastern cuisine, we made the excellent bad decision to walk 3 miles in the 86 degree 89% humidity. We left at around 10:00 am for a 1:00pm taiko drum class/experience to explore the city along our route.
Liam spotted a giant doughnut and was instantly captivated. There was a girl out front handing out tickets for a time and number where you could stand in line for your turn to buy doughnuts and lemonade. We waited about 40 minutes (mostly because we found a shady bench to rest…remember the 3mi hike in the sweltering heat) for our turn. It was totally worth the wait! Great pick Liam! Randy’s Doughnuts lived up to everything we were hoping for and it was calories well consumed.
From there, we found where our taiko class was going to be but still had time to kill. We stumbled upon an archeological site from the Edo period that had some cool carved stones, but that was about it.
Our Taiko class with Eva Kestner was fantastic! We (not so quickly) found our rhythms and learned how to play basic tunes and then a festival beat. It was such a blast! We also discovered new muscles that had not appeared for years (I’m still sore this morning).
After Taiko, we ventured into the subway and took the train over to Tokyo Tower. Along the way, Liam spotted a vending machine that had hot coffee and Kevin was through the roof excited! Even though it was so darn hot, Kevin had to have his hot coffee from the vending machine. We finally made it to Tokyo tower and after all the walking and the taiko class we were murderously hungry. We ended up in a Persian (?) cafe and had a snack (I’m still not sure what I ate).
We took the elevator to the top of the tower and had great views of the city. The weather was overcast but still pretty clear (not clear enough to see Mt. Fuji though). We were exhausted at that point and with the skies about to open up, we took a taxi back to the hotel for a final quick dinner before sacking out for the night.
